Romance author Robyn Carr, hosts “Carr Chat", a monthly Q & A interview of authors at Henderson’s Paseo Verde Library. On Wednesday, October 28, Robyn chatted with Chris Marie Green, author of the noir fantasy-mystery series, Vampire Babylon, published by Ace. Path of Razors, the fifth book in the series, hit the shelves August, 2009. Copies of the books were available for sale; and afterward, Chris autographed and posed for photos with Robyn and fans. The library conference room setting enhanced the intimate and friendly style of Robyn’s chat, and I left feeling as if I’d just had coffee with friends.
A former eighth grade teacher from San Diego, CA, Chris started her writing career as Crystal Green with Harlequin/Silhouette romances. A fast and prolific writer, her bloodlust began with her first vampire book, The Huntress, for Silhouette’s Bombshell series. She describes it as an old-school Transylvanian romance. The sequel, Twice Bitten, followed. But Chris was the one bitten, saying she felt the need to write a longer vampire story. “It was a story I had to write. I just had to,” she says of the Vampire Babylon series. She enjoys writing her vampire mysteries because she can make statements without being preachy. “Vamps can be so much more than just vampires,” she said.
A panelist this year, she regularly attends San Diego’s Comic Con and writes a daily blog. Chris also admits to “watching way too much TV,” but finds it helps with the creative process – “it’s multitasking.” Although she grew up reading historic romances and currently reads all kinds of genres, science fiction is probably her favorite. She really admires Frank Herbert’s Dune series, “I love the way the story unfolds and you’re pulled in.”
The only complaints she has about being a writer are those things that take her away from writing, “I would rather write than handle the mundane details or the business of writing.” Sticky notes on her closet are her preferred method of staying organized and keeping track of characters and story ideas. Thanks to the internet, her mom pitches in as admin assistant and helps with some of those pesky business details.
A resident of Las Vegas, she does all her writing here - staying holed up in her condo, not going out on the town much. She uses trips back to San Diego to relax, and travels to research the cities where her stories take place. No, she doesn’t see her characters walking around her condo, “but they talk to me and I talk back to them.”
Her ultimate goal is to stay successful, maybe get on the New York Times Bestseller list, and of course, a movie deal would be great. Her next project with Ace is a post-apocalyptic, paranormal series she says is best described as “Shane meets Mad Max.”
